The power of purpose

A clearly defined purpose is what makes our life meaningful, it’s what makes us get up in the morning. In the 21st century, we have become accustomed to chasing ‘means’ yet a life with meaning is the most important thing we must all strive for. Organisations need to strive for more than just financial stakeholder value, they have to work towards the principles of contributing to the societies they function in, creating a more meaningful way of life for their followers. What’s holding back organisations from establishing a purpose?

A survey conducted of 474 executives concluded that there is near-unanimity in recognising the importance of organisational purpose. Only 46% said their organisation had a purpose but didn’t operate in a purpose-driven way, and 44% were still trying to establish a purpose for the organisation. Statistics indicate that companies with a strong sense of purpose transform and innovate better. 53% of executives who said their company had a strong sense of purpose, sited successful innovative and transformational efforts, compared with 31% who were trying to articulate a sense of purpose, while 19% of the companies had not given any thought to purpose at all.

Establishing a purposeful framework for followers

Purpose occurs at two levels – at an organisational level and at a follower level. The greater the alignment of purpose between the follower and the organisation, the healthier the relationship and level of engagement. Alignment between the organisation and the follower is fundamental to involvement and joint accountability. A framework which clearly demonstrates and aligns purpose is key to achieving improved organisational effectiveness.
